Battery Drill

A battery drill is a very useful tool for the householder as well as the tradesman but the choice available seems quite daunting to the average person and the cost of a cordless drill varies so much, but why? Tradesmen such as plumbers, electricians and builders have possibly several battery drills in their vans and many homes will have one in the garage, they really are that useful but it is what you intend to use it for that will determine how much you should pay. If you are a sometime DIYer then a cheap battery drill will suffice but if you are a builder then you really should pay for a proffessional quality drill, scrimping on a tool that you will make use of frequently is a false economy. The differences in price reflect how well made a cordless or battery drill is, and the features that it will have so lets look at the differences. A cheap battery drill will come with a low cost power cell which is fine for the occasional job around the house. The battery will almost certainly be of the NiCad variety which is cheap to produce but has a few drawbacks. The NiCad battery self-discharges, which means if you leave it on the shelf for a few weeks it will have gone flat, it is relatively heavy therefore the drill will weigh more overall and this battery is damaging to the environment. A quality battery drill will have a Li-ION battery which although more expensive initially will accept more recharging cycles, is lighter and does not self discharge. The motors will vary with price from a low quality one with very little torque, no speed control and a high drain on the battery to the top end drills with a robust, efficient motor with variable speed setting, adjustable torque and even a hammer function for drilling into masonry. There will also be differences in the balance of the drill. This is a major consideration for those of us who use battery drills day in, day out. A badly balanced drill will leave you with a sore wrist, aching arms and could even lead to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome. If you intend to purchase a battery drill then first decide what you intend to use it for, how often you will need it and how much you wish to spend.It is usually sensible to spend a little more and get a good drill because it will pay you back over t |
