Play the perfect pitch shot
The pitching wedge is used for surprise, surprise the pitch shot, but what is a pitch shot? Basically it's a fairly high flying shot which will roll out upon landing. The roll out is comparatively short to the flight but depends upon a couple of factors such as the landing surface, surface condition and obviously whether that surface is sloping. To minimise roll out it is essential to strike the ball correctly and land it where you want it.A pitching wedge will have grooves on the clubface of one design or another but whatever the form that they take, square, v-cut or different it is vital to keep them clean and free of dirt or the spin that you require will not be there. Use a brush or even a tee to keep them spotless. Play a Perfect Pitch Shot Pitching a golf ball consistently takes practice, all wedge shots are "feel shots" that is, you have to develop a feeling for how far any given strike will send the ball. The only way to perfect the feel is to hone your pitching swing to the point where you are confident of striking the golf ball the same way time after time.The best way of achieving this is to simplifly your swing and take out as many of the chance factors as possible. The Simple Pitching Swing First, the aim, many golfers make a basic mistake in their aim when playing a pitch shot. This is the error of aligning the body parallel to the target line as you would when playing an iron or wood shot. Due to the relatively short swing there is not time to get the clubface square and you then have to manipulate the club with your hands, an uncertain chance factor with which we can do without. So, aim the club face at the target but open your lower body to it, what this means is that your feet and hips need to be aimed a little left of target but keep your shoulders square.The fact that your lower have is open means you have preset the impact position and eliminated some risk.The ball should be slightly forward of centre in your stance and at set up your hands should rest over your left thigh. This is also the impact position as the club will strike the ball before the ground taking a little divot and squeezing the ball between the clubface and the turf. It is this squeeze that imparts the backspin to the ball causing it to check up on landing. Remember to keep your grooves clean! The back swing is mostly in the wrists and so you swing back with small turning of the body and arms but cock your wrists sharply bringing the club up vertically and then swing through the ball and finish with the club shaft pointing vertically up on the other side.That is all there is to it, simple. Practice your stance this way. In front of a mirror, adopt a narrow stance with your weight about sixty per cent on your lead foot, flex the knees and as you swing through the ball allow the knees to follow the club through. You should develop an almost mirror image of the back swing with the follow through, to check this place a shaft either side of yourself on a line level with your heels, your swing should cause the club to miss either one. This checks your swing plane. Practice, practice and remember to keep all unneccesary movements to a minimum. |
