What Is Golf Wedge Bounce?

By Norman Stanley

What is the bounce on a golf club?

Bounce is simply put, the angle between the leading edge of a golf club and the trailing edge.

If you pick a sand wedge and stand it on a firm surface the back edge will be raised off the floor. The higher off the floor it is, the higher the bounce angle.

Why is it important? The bounce angle is designed to help the club bounce through the turf or sand and not dig in.

For a sand wedge for example to strike the ball and keep on moving forward the sole of the club has to bounce through the sand, building a wave of sand in front of it. It is the sand which actually moves the ball in a bunker shot.

Without the bounce angle the club head would dig into the sand ever deeper and the result would be a duffed shot.

Playing with too much bounce on a firm fairway will often times result in a thinned shot where the ball will shoot off the club head at a low trajectory, flying over the green into the cabbage on the other side.
